As with many other industries, the effects of the pandemic on manufacturing have been enormous. Even as public restrictions fade and aims move back from surviving to thriving, there are still challenges for the industry to face.

From climate change to the cost of living crisis, labour shortages and supply chain issues, the list goes on. 

As the pandemic hit, many manufacturers pivoted to making hand sanitiser, and there was a derogation of restrictions on biocidal hand sanitiser products to assist in this.

Derogation (noun):

  1. the act or process of weakening or lessening

  2. a limit, retraction, or removal


The temporary exemption meant that products with certain formulae did not need to attain a product authorisation. 

This was to reduce supply chain issues in light of unprecedented demand, and to keep the public safer. 

Now, with public restrictions lifted and fewer supply chain issues when it comes to biocidal hand sanitiser, the derogation has been lifted. 


What does this mean for you?

Some manufacturers who had been making hand sanitisers throughout the pandemic are no longer legally able to. 

Any companies that have relied on these manufacturers will be unable to attain or use the products they have been using to keep their people safe for many months, or it may now be illegal for them to do so. 

Fortunately, there are products that have been compliant, regulated, and approved since long before the pandemic began.
