Keeping the likes of your cleanroom, supply chain or work environment clean and disinfected is one of the most basic, yet important steps. Whether it’s minimising the risk of spreading COVID-19 or keeping staff and customers safer within your business – using an IPA product of good quality is crucial.

What are IPA products?

Isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol is a clear, colourless liquid that is a major component of rubbing alcohol as well as regular household items such as cleaners, disinfectants, and hand sanitisers; it also can be found in pharmaceuticals.

How can you tell IPA products are good quality?

In a previous blog, ‘Achieving Cleanroom Cleanliness: Everything you need to know about IPA Products’, we discussed how IPA’s effectiveness is dependent on its concentration and intended use.

When used for killing bacteria and enveloped viruses, it is most effective in concentrations of 60%-90%. Breaching the cell wall fully, the presence of water slows down the evaporation rate and increases the surface contact time with the membrane, giving it more time to kill germs and bacteria. Whereas higher percentages, such as 99%, break down the outside of the cell before it can penetrate the germ and evaporates quickly due to the absence of water, meaning it disappears too quickly to kill all germs and bacteria. Those with high concentrations are often used as cleaning agents for water-sensitive equipment.

AGMA offers a range of IPA products that are BS EN 1500 and EN 14476 compliant, killing 99.99% of bacteria and enveloped viruses. All AGMA alcohol products use European Pharmacopeia grade alcohol before being blended with injection-quality water in order to guarantee endotoxin levels below 0.25EU/ml, prior to being sterilised by a validated gamma irradiation process at no less than 25kGy.

When you buy IPA products, there are a few ways to help ensure you are purchasing quality, effective products. You should look for validations to international standards, and consistent and available certificates that prove their efficacy.

Why outsourcing IPA products can help in-house

Focussing on your specialism helps your business perform at its best, without having to spend time and effort creating your own in-house products. By choosing a specialist supplier instead, you can focus fully on what it is you’re best at, without sacrificing things like compliance – giving you peace of mind when it comes to safety. Outsourcing IPA products also removes the need for your business to perform efficacy testing.
