A chemist by training, Tom helps maintain our stringent quality control standards in our labs in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, where we develop, formulate and manufacture all of our speciality chemical products before shipping them worldwide.
We sat down to ask Tom a few questions about his role at AGMA.
What are your responsibilities?
It’s my responsibility to quality check our products, intermediates and raw materials against specifications.
Should there be any failures, I would investigate and put measures in place to avoid recurrence.
I calibrate and performance-check lab equipment.
Finally, I also assist in quality assurance, including updating SOPs, COSHH, and maintaining AGMA’s quality management system to ISO standards.
What is your background?
I’m a chemistry graduate with 10 years industrial experience in various industries including in a pharmaceutical cGMP lab.
Most recently, I worked at a waste oil company in Suffolk as a Production Operative, Lab Analyst, and Yard Supervisor where I learnt most about multiple sides of the business and was exposed to different departments within the business.
Can you summarise your job in 3 words?
Lab, paperwork, testing.
What is the best thing about your role?
The variation in my tasks and responsibilities. I enjoy always having something to do. Working at a SME like this allows you the opportunity to understand the different aspects of the business. It’s a great team at AGMA—everyone is friendly and works together in the same direction.
What challenges do you face and how do you overcome them?
Having multiple tasks going on at once. I overcome this by establishing the priorities of the department and the business as a whole.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Dog walks and spending time with family.
