You can prevent harmful contamination from entering critical cleanroom and other environments by using double or triple-bagged products together with an efficient two or three-step transfer process.

What’s the purpose of double or triple bagged products?

Maintaining Sterility
Double or triple-bagging provides multiple layers of protection, reducing the risk of contamination during handling and transport.

Ease of Transfer

Multiple bagging is a highly effective way to transfer sterile products into cleanrooms or isolators. By sequentially removing the outer layers as you pass from less to more highly controlled areas, you ensure the inner layers remain sterile.

Contamination Control

Multiple bagging acts as a barrier to external contaminants such as particles, microorganisms, or moisture.

Double vs triple: how to choose

When choosing between double bagging and triple bagging for cleanroom products, the decision largely depends on the specific cleanroom requirements and processes, as well as the level of contamination control needed. Here are some points to consider.

Double bagged products

Process

  • The sterile product is placed in one bag (primary layer) and sealed.
  • This primary bag is then placed into a second bag (secondary layer), which is also sealed.

Applications

  • Common for items that will be transferred directly into cleanrooms or controlled environments.
  • Ensures the inner bag remains sterile during the removal of the outer bag in less controlled areas.

Advantages

  • Simple and effective for maintaining sterility.
  • Reduces contamination risks during single-step transfers.
  • Reduced the volume of plastic waste, supporting environmental policies and sustainability strategies.
    • Wiping down the bag with a sporicide as an alternative to using a third bag aligns with the end user’s contamination control strategy.

Triple bagged products

Process

  • After double bagging, a third bag (tertiary layer) is added and sealed.

Applications

  • Often used when products must move through multiple zones of decreasing cleanliness, or when stringent sterility is required.
  • Especially useful for high-risk transfers or shipments.

Advantages

  • Provides an additional layer of security against contamination.
  • Ideal for environments with multiple airlocks or transfer hatches.
  • Allows removal of outer layers progressively, maintaining sterility in inner layers.

Sterility and compliance ensured

Double and triple bagging aligns with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements, which focus on contamination prevention through the lifecycle of sterile medical products. Its effectiveness and reliability is such that it’s often recommended or required by regulatory bodies for these products.
